New patient exams can be categorized into two groups
Adult- Adults typically include patients 18 years and older. At your first visit Dr. Wheeler performs hard (tooth) and soft (cheeks, palate, tongue, etc) tissue exams, comprehensive periodontal (gum) exam, oral cancer screening, TMJ evaluation, obtains appropriate radiographs (x-rays), intra-oral photographs, and in some cases impressions for diagnostic casts and extra-oral photographs. During this time, Dr. Wheeler will do his best to understand your goals and desires for the type of treatment you are interested in obtaining. He will also take the time needed to inform you about the most important issues that should be addressed first. In some cases, especially if it has been a while since your last cleaning, Dr. Wheeler may not be able to complete the exam at the first visit due to heavy tartar build up. In a situation like this, typically a debridement (a generalized removal of the build up on your teeth) will be performed. Since the exam typically takes about 90 minutes, we will schedule you back for a cleaning appointment. The type of cleaning you need will be determined by ined by Dr. Wheeler based on your current condition. Some patients with a more complex case may need to come back for a consultation visit prior to any treatment. This time will be used to present you with treatment options and allow you to have time to ask questions and decide what treatment options you prefer. Many times, patients bring their spouse, parent, or close friend with them during this appointment. Children- Children receive a similar exam. Typically, a hard and soft tissue exam, and PSR (gum disease screening). This information along with information from radiographs will help Dr. Wheeler inform the patients parents on the current condition of the patient. Often, a cleaning is done on children the same day of the initial exam.
